In Timor Leste, Guterres celebrates past unity and looks to the future

Praising efforts by African countries to alleviate poverty and build more stable societies, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres pledged his on-going support for ending conflict and building peace across the continent.

United Nations agencies in Timor-Leste are supporting response efforts, as floods and landslides left widespread damage across the country, including in capital Dili.  

As Timor-Leste prepares to choose a new president in March, Roy Trivedy, the senior UN official in the country, explains the Organization’s role in securing the vote for all citizens across the small island nation, which gained independence from Indonesia in 2002, and expresses his hopes for safe, inclusive, and transparent elections.
